1024核工厂’s Self-Perform Team聽Plays Crucial Role in Returning School Bell to Fire Department聽
When the 550-pound bell聽needed to be聽returned to its original home at , it聽required聽the precision, planning and expertise of our Self-Perform team.
Columbus Elementary School is the oldest school in Appleton, Wis. Built in 1892, the Appleton Fire Department donated a bell to the school for its second life after calling firefighters to help when disaster struck. Today, the bell is only rung for ceremonial occasions. And now, it is back in its original location thanks to Travis Riehl, Crane Operator, who used a 100-ton crane to carefully lift and transport the聽bell聽two miles.聽聽
The three-hour process required careful planning due to the bell鈥檚 age and the 1800s-era, stone-and-wood tower that held the bell. The bell was disassembled and maneuvered to the tower opening before the crane secured the bell, with only an inch of clearance at the crane pick point. All new rigging and soft nylon chokers were used to ensure proper capacity load. A project of this size typically would not need such a detailed plan, but the team developed an engineered lift plan to protect the bell and structure.
Before the bell was moved, the fire department joined the Self-Perform team鈥檚 morning stretch and flex, creating a moment of camaraderie for all.
